Snow-covered trails and winter magic – hike Etna South to 3000m
This guided hike takes you deep into the snowy volcanic landscapes of Etna South, starting from Rifugio Sapienza. Surrounded by dramatic craters and breathtaking views, you'll experience the volcano in its most magical season. If you have trekking experience and dream of climbing Mount Etna in winter, this is the perfect excursion for you. With the Etna Winter Hike up to 3000 meters, you’ll first ride the Etna cable car to 2500m, then continue on foot all the way to the impressive Barbagallo craters, just under 3000m altitude.
Start location: Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza
Starttime: At 9.00 hour
Duration excursion: 5-6 hours
The itinerary Etna winter hike up to 3000m
Your adventure begins at 08:30, when you meet your certified volcanological guide. Around 09:00, you will take the Etna cable car up to 2500 metres, where the hike begins.
From here, you’ll start your ascent on foot to nearly 3000 metres, covering a vertical gain of around 500 metres. The first stop is the 2001 eruption crater, known as Crater del Laghetto. After exploring this remarkable formation, the hike continues to the Valle del Bove viewpoint at approximately 2750 meters – one of the most dramatic and scenic points on Mount Etna.
The trail then leads to the Barbagallo craters, formed during the intense 2002 eruption. Located at nearly 3000 metres above sea level, these craters offer one of the highest accessible viewpoints on Etna in winter. Along the way, your guide will point out active fumaroles, where warm gas still escapes from the lava – a powerful reminder that Etna is an active volcano, and why it’s essential to explore it with an experienced guide.
As a final highlight, you’ll walk through a spectacular lava channel – a natural canyon carved by flowing lava – offering a unique and immersive volcanic landscape.
From the Barbagallo area, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Etna’s active summit craters, including the South-East Crater and the Central Crater, often emitting smoke or gas.
After taking in these incredible sights, we begin our descent back to the cable car station, followed by the ride down to Rifugio Sapienza at 1900 meters.

This is, of course, a very personal matter — what’s challenging for one person may be easy for another. In general, this Etna winter hike is suitable for anyone who is fit and in good physical condition. The main challenge is not so much the terrain, but the altitude, as you'll be hiking at elevations between 2500 and nearly 3000 meters.
The hike involves a total altitude gain of around 500 meters and takes approximately 5 to 6 hours round trip, including breaks and time to enjoy the views. It’s not a technical climb, but you should feel comfortable walking for several hours in snowy and uneven volcanic terrain.
Snowshoes are not included because they are not always necessary. Snowshoes will only be used when there is a lot of (fresh) snow. If you have your own snowshoes, you can use them, otherwise you can rent them (€15.00 per pair) from one of the rental shops near Rifugio Sapienza or your guide.
Only children between the ages of 10 and 12, who are well prepared and physically fit, may participate in this hike. Due to the height at which you walk, the length of the trek and the 500-metre difference in altitude, we have set a lower limit of 10 years.
This is because the cable car is managed by an outside party and not by the guides themselves. The price changes every year at different times, which is why we show the price of the hike, excluding the cable car.
