The Etna North Winter Trekking & Lava Cave itinerary
A winter trekking experience immersed in the magic of Etna’s snow-covered landscape — ideal for those who love adventure and wish to discover some of the most enchanting corners of the volcano’s northern slope. Starting from Piano Provenzana (1,800 m), we’ll hike through beech and larch pine forests, crossing a landscape shaped by the last eruption of 2002 and by ancient lava flows.
✔ Beech and Larch Pine Forests
✔ 2002 Eruption and 1911 Craters
✔ Grotta dei Lamponi Lava Cave
Along the trail, we’ll make our first stop at the remains of Hotel Le Betulle — once a landmark of the Piano Provenzana ski area, now buried beneath the lava of the 2002 eruption, with only a few ruins still visible.
As we continue our ascent, we’ll reach the 1911 eruptive fracture, a panoramic viewpoint offering breathtaking vistas over the summit craters and the surrounding valleys.
Descending along the northern slope, we’ll approach the Timparossa area, where the vegetation becomes denser and the landscape changes dramatically. Here we’ll find the charming Timparossa Mountain Hut, a small refuge nestled in the forest — the perfect spot for a short break before continuing our journey toward our destination: the Grotta dei Lamponi.
This lava flow cave is one of the most fascinating on Mount Etna, featuring natural tunnels formed by molten rock and an almost surreal atmosphere. We’ll safely explore its interior, admire the volcanic formations, and uncover the unique story hidden within its walls.
Along the way, we’ll also have the opportunity to observe the Hornitos — small solidified lava structures that bear witness to the intense volcanic activity of this area.
After visiting the cave, we’ll begin our return to Piano Provenzana, concluding a unique experience surrounded by winter landscapes, snow-covered forests, and traces of Mount Etna’s raw power.
Please note that the winter trekking itinerary may vary from the one described here, as the safety of participants and guides always comes first. For this reason, the route may be adjusted depending on snow and/or ice conditions.

In general, the excursion is suitable for anyone who is active and in good physical condition.
What often makes it challenging is the total duration and distance, rather than the terrain itself.
Snowshoes are not included because they are not always necessary (autumn for example). They are only used when there is a significant amount of snow. If you have your own snowshoes, you are welcome to use them. Otherwise, you can rent a pair for €15.00 from one of the rental shops near Rifugio Sapienza, and your guide will assist you with them.
Only children aged 10 to 12 with excellent physical fitness and an active attitude can join this excursion.
Due to the length and intensity of the trek, we have set a minimum age limit for safety and comfort reasons.
