Etna Summit Craters sunset and lava - 3347m with 4x4 bus (round trip)
The Etna Crateri Sommitali Sunset and Lava excursion starts from Piano Provenzana, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. From here, you board a comfortable 4×4 off-road bus that takes you up to almost 2900 meters altitude. The adventure continues on foot: a guided trek of about 4.5 kilometers with a 500-meter altitude gain, requiring approximately 2 hours of uphill walking.
As you ascend, the landscape shifts from black lava fields to surreal volcanic terrain. At the summit — 3347 meters above sea level — your efforts are richly rewarded. You’ll stand on the edge of the active craters, surrounded by yellow and white sulphur deposits, steaming vents, and the powerful energy of the living volcano beneath your feet.
At this breathtaking height, you’ll witness the sun setting behind the Sicilian mountains, casting golden light across the lunar landscape. The view stretches from the summit craters all the way to the Ionian Sea, making this a moment of pure wonder.
As twilight sets in, you begin the descent back to 2900 meters, where the 4×4 vehicle is waiting to bring you safely down to Piano Provenzana at 1800 meters altitude.
This is not just a hike — it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness Etna’s summit at sunset, with fire, lava, and silence all around.

When is it possible
The Etna Summit Crater sunset and lava excursion – 3347m is only possible in high season (let’s say from 20 June to about the end of August).
The volcanological guide determines each morning after assessing the conditions whether or not the hike should be performed. For example, the activity of the volcano and the weather conditions are also taken into account, based on reports from the institute of volcanology. This could mean that the excursion may be cancelled at the last minute. There is nothing we can do about this, as everyone’s safety is top priority! However, they always offer an alternative excursion so that you can still see and explore Etna (and its eventual eruption!).
* We can never guarantee that you will see lava or magma. This is because the volcano can “interrupt” activity at any time.
