Trekking Itinerary – Etna’s Active Lava Flow

We offer two different itineraries: an easier version suitable for everyone, and a more challenging route designed for experienced hikers. When making your request, please specify which option you would like to choose.

Option 1: Active Lava Flow Trekking on Etna – easy

The excursion starts on the eastern side of Mount Etna (the exact meeting point will be sent after booking), where you will meet your authorized (volcanic) guide, who will accompany you throughout the entire hike. From here, the trek begins: approximately 2.5 hours in total (roundway), walking across both old and recent lava flows. We gradually approach the active lava flow, always respecting strict safety limits.

An intense and unforgettable experience through lunar landscapes and the living breath of the volcano, with time to observe, take photos, and feel Etna’s powerful energy up close. Total duration is around 4 hours.

Option 2: Active Lava Flow Trekking on Etna – Experts only

For experienced hikers, we offer a more demanding trekking route. During this excursion, we also visit active hornitos located at higher altitude. This trek lasts at least 6 hours and is suitable only for experienced trekkers and strong walkers.

Detail: Trekking active lava flow on Mount Etna

The trekking to the active lava flow on Etna is available every day upon reservation (as long as the eruption lasts). The meeting is always 30 minutes before the tour starts. It is very important to arrive on time in order to meet the guide and attend the briefing. Your equipment will also be checked before departure. The excursion lasts about 4 hours in total.

Availability

This excursion is available only as long as the lava flow remains active and volcanic conditions allow the trek to take place safely. Each guide can take a maximum of 10 participants, which means places are very limited. Early booking is highly recommended.

What to Wear – Be Prepared for the Altitude

Keep in mind that this excursion takes you up Mount Etna with winter conditions, where temperatures can be very different from those at the coast. Wear winter clothes, it can feel more chilly when there is wind!

Being well-prepared will ensure you enjoy the volcanic views in full comfort — whatever the weather!

Food and drinks
There is no bar or service point at the startpoint. So be sure to bring your own drinks and snacks! We advise you to:

• Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person
• Pack a sandwich or snack, as you’ll return to your car only around 17.30 hour
