Shopping in Sicily (with Etna as your compass)

Shopping

Shopping in Sicily isn’t just “buying things”, it’s a way to take home a slice of the island’s soul. From artisan ceramics and volcanic-lava crafts to slow-food delicacies you’ll dream about later, here’s how to time your finds, what to look for, and where to go—especially around Catania.

When sales “saldi” happen?

In Italy, there are two big, regulated sale seasons each year:
• Winter sales: typically early January (in 2025 Sicily started on 4 January) and run for several weeks.
• Summer sales: typically the first Saturday of July (in 2025 Sicily started on 5 July) and run into early/mid-September.

Outside the official sales, you’ll also see: mid-season promos, Black-Friday and Cyber Monday offers and end-of-line discounts in outlet villages.

Sicily’s souvenirs: what to buy?

When you’re in Sicily, of course you’ll want to bring home a little something to remember it by. Maybe a small gift for friends or family, but don’t forget to treat yourself too. A lasting memory of this beautiful Italian island.

The cheapest (and honestly, the most meaningful) souvenir comes straight from Mount Etna itself: lava. During your excursion, you can pick your own favorite lava stone. According to Dutch customs, there’s no problem taking it home. Technically, Italian law says you’re not allowed to remove natural materials from protected areas or national parks. I have to be honest though — I’ve never had any issues with it, neither in Italy nor in the Netherlands. But… of course, it’s your own responsibility! 😉

Other typical Sicilian souvenirs include ceramics (especially from Caltagirone), Etna wines, pistachio nuts or cream, and olive oil. Read more here about unique Sicilian souvenirs and where to shop the best pieces!
