Lipari, the perfect base of the Aeolian Islands
Lipari, the largest and most visited island in the Aeolian archipelago, is a unique blend of nature, culture, and history. This beautiful island in the Tyrrhenian Sea offers an array of activities for adventure travelers, beach lovers, and culture enthusiasts. Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure, or a dip into the rich past of the Aeolian Islands, Lipari has something for everyone.
My experience on Lipari
Lipari felt to me like the perfect mix of everything that makes the Aeolian Islands so special: cozy village full of life, nice streets with terraces and stores, and at the same time so much beautiful nature and tranquility around you. We stayed near the port, an ideal location: you can walk right into the center of Lipari, where you will find everything you need – restaurants, a supermarket, and plenty of atmosphere.
What made Lipari extra special to me is that it is a nice starting point to explore not only the island itself, but also the other Aeolian islands. Everything is within easy reach.I highly recommended renting one of those cute little old Fiats with an open roof – you know, one of those little cars that immediately evokes a vacation feeling. We drove the panoramic route with it, all along the coast. The views along the way are breathtaking. We stopped at White Beach, where the water is crystal clear blue and you can also see pieces of obsidian among the white rubble stone.

In addition, one of my personal favorite locations is Cave di Caolino. A unique ‘gorge’ with beautiful colors as well as stunning nature with panoramic views.
And don’t forget to visit Belvedere Quattro Occhi. What a place! Really worth stopping there and taking in the scenery.
Perhaps the most romantic location is at the Osservatorio. There we took a short walk, the reward being spectacular views of, among other things, the island of Vulcano, which is right across from Lipari.
Lipari surprised and touched me. It is lively yet quiet, charming yet rugged, small yet grand at the same time. For me, an island to take in your heart!
How to get to Lipari
Lipari can be reached by ferry from several Sicilian cities.
From Milazzo: The most frequent and fast connection, with crossings lasting about 1 hour.
From Messina and Palermo: Less frequent connections are available.
It is advisable to book tickets in advance, especially during high season.
The 3 best viewpoints on Lipari
Lipari offers numerous spots with fantastic views of the sea and surrounding islands, but these three locations really stand out for me:
From here you can walk into nature via a small path. Follow this path to the Punto panoramico Faraglioni e spiaggia (see google maps) for a beautiful view. Really a must do! This is another beautiful location to enjoy the sunset. You look out from here on the island of Vulcano, the sea and several faraglioni.

Sights on Lipari
The Old Town and Fortress of Lipari: This iconic fortress offers panoramic views of the sea and the island itself. The narrow, picturesque streets surrounding the fort are perfect for a quiet stroll and provide an authentic picture of daily life on Lipari.
Visit the Archaeological Museum
Located within the ancient city walls, this museum offers a deep insight into the history of the Aeolian Islands, with collections ranging from prehistoric to Roman artifacts.
Cave di Caolino: A kind of mini canyon in orange rock with stunning panoramic sea views and several faraglioni. We ourselves watched the sunset here (in late October), highly recommended!
The Beaches of Lipari: Lipari’s beaches range from small coves with clear blue waters to more rugged rocky shores. Some popular beaches include Spiaggia Bianca, known for its clear, turquoise waters, and Canneto Beach, where you can enjoy sunbathing and various water sports. I myself have also been to White Beach, a small beach with a cute Lido, clear blue water and lots of Osidiana lava rocks!

Practical tips for your visit
Best travel time
The best time to visit Lipari is between May and September, when the weather is warm and sunny, and the sea is perfect for swimming. You’ll also find everything open and active then. Avoid the crowds of August if you prefer a quieter experience. I myself have been there in late October. Then many excursions are no longer possible and lidos are already cleaned up. However, it is nice and quiet to explore the island this way!

Transportation on the island
Lipari is easily accessible by ferry from Sicily (Liberty Lines from Milazzo) and other Aeolian islands. On the island itself, it is best to rent a scooter or bicycle (e-bike) to easily explore the different parts of Lipari. We were here in late October and rented a convertible (highly recommended!). But be aware that in the town of Lipari itself it is not easy to find parking, especially in high season!
Local food and delicacies
Sample local cuisine with specialties such as fresh fish, caponata and the famous Malvasia wine, produced only on the Aeolian Islands. Many restaurants in the historic center offer authentic Sicilian cuisine, perfect to pair with a sea view.
Accommodation
It is advisable to book in advance, especially during high season, as Lipari is a popular destination.
Lipari effortlessly combines natural beauty with cultural richness, making it a destination that offers both relaxation and adventure.
Why visit Lipari?
Lipari offers a unique opportunity to experience the best of the Aeolian Islands: stunning scenery, rich history, and access to the volcanic natural wonders of Sicily. It is the ideal destination for those who want to relax, enjoy local culture, and experience unforgettable adventures in the Aeolian archipelago.
In addition, Lipari is the “base” island from which you can actually visit all the other islands easily with a day trip. Furthermore, on Lipari you have everything from supermarket, stores to even a hospital!
