Enjoying Mount Etna with the whole family

Exploring Mount Etna with children is a truly unforgettable experience. The volcanic landscape, black lava trails, and views over the sea make it feel like walking on another planet — also for kids! However, it’s important to choose the right excursion and prepare well to ensure a safe and fun adventure for the whole family.

4 Tips for Visiting Etna with Children

  1. No strollers: The terrain around Piano Provenzana is volcanic and uneven, so strollers or pushchairs are not suitable. A baby carrier (backpack model) is recommended for small children.
  2. Protect against the sun: Bring a sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The high altitude means strong UV radiation, even when it’s cloudy.
  3. Bring snacks and water: Kids get hungry and thirsty quickly, especially in the sun and at altitude. Bring enough water and something to nibble on.
  4. Dress in layers: The weather can change quickly on Etna. Even on a hot day in the valley, it can be windy or cool at 2000+ meters.

Going to Higher Altitudes with Children on Mount Etna

Visiting Mount Etna is a unique experience — even for the little ones! However, once you go above 2500 meters, the air gets thinner, the pressure changes, and the body needs to adapt to a different oxygen level. That’s why we recommend excursions above 2500 meters only for children aged 3 and older.

If you do decide to go higher with younger children, we advise the following precautions:

  • Ascend slowly: Take your time on the way up. Plan to make several stops along the way and let your child adjust gradually to the altitude.
  • Acclimatize regularly: At each stop, especially from 1800m to 2500m and again from 2500m to 2900m, give your child 20–30 minutes to adjust before continuing.
  • Encourage drinking or sucking: Offer water, milk, or a pacifier during the ascent. This helps with pressure regulation, especially in the ears.
  • Watch for signs of discomfort: Fatigue, nausea, irritability or shortness of breath may be signs of altitude sensitivity. If this happens, go back to a lower altitude and give your child time to recover.

Every child is different, so observe carefully and always prioritize their comfort and well-being. Higher altitudes can be amazing for children — if approached with care and patience.

Choose the right activity with children!

Not all children enjoy long walks — especially if they’re not used to hiking or if the route has little variety. It’s important to choose an excursion that matches your child’s age, energy level, and interests. Children who aren’t used to walking may get bored quickly or tired on a hike with too few exciting moments.

Look for activities with variety or a sense of adventure. A short trek combined with a cable car ride, a big 4×4 bus, or even a lava cave visit can make the experience feel like a real expedition. Excursions that include multiple stops, changing scenery, and hands-on elements (like touching lava rocks or spotting steam vents) help keep children curious and engaged.

Choosing the right mix of activity and rest keeps everyone happy — and turns your Etna visit into a fun and memorable experience for the whole family.

Safety first: All tours are led by experienced guides who are used to working with families and know how to adapt the experience to different ages and comfort levels.

Etna can be a magical place for children — filled with stories of lava, craters, and smoky peaks. With the right preparation, it will become a highlight of their trip to Sicily.
